Assistive Technology Process for Students with a 504 Plan

In the 2013-2014 school year, Wayne RESA changed its process for Assistive Technology evaluations.

The following is information regarding this process, outlining the ways you can obtain support from
Assistive & Instructional Technology for a student with a 504 Plan.

AT Evaluation should not be written in an INITIAL 504 Plan*
*see below for guidance when writing a 504 plan with AT services

If Assistive Technology needs are discussed at an INITIAL 504 Plan Meeting, follow the steps below:
Step ONE
Consult the AT Checklist
Step TWO
Implement strategies and supports for 6-8 weeks.
Step THREE
After 6-8 weeks of classroom interventions, contact the P-CCS A&IT Department to determine the next steps in the AT process.

P-CCS A&IT Department will determine the course of action, i.e. AT Consult or AT Evaluation.

504 Coordinator will contact student’s family to communicate the plan.

Consult

What is an AT consult?
An AT Consult is a brainstorming session between the AT consultant and school team members via phone, email or in person to discuss AT supports that may work for your student.

How can I get an AT consult?
Simple Process
Fill out the AT Contact Request Form and either Heather Weaver or Stacey Banks will contact you within 5 school days.

AT Checklist

It's always a good idea to fill out the AT Checklist before you speak with your consultant. This tracks AT strategies you've already tried.

Scheduling a Consult
You and your AT Consultant will find a time that works to either speak with you on the phone or in person.

Evaluation

What is an AT evaluation?
An AT Evaluation is an observation in the classroom by the AT consultant followed up by a 504 Plan Re-evaluation meeting to share the results and possible recommendations of the observation.

How can I get an AT evaluation?

Initial Contact

You must Contact an AT consultant before requesting an AT EVALUATION.

Contact Form
Although the AT consultant has knowledge of the evaluation, the AT Contact Request Form is a required document that must be completed. This gives the AT consultant detailed information about your student.

30-Day Timeline for Evaluations
The AT consultant has 30 days to complete the evaluation and then the AT consultant needs to be invited to a new IEP to discuss the results of the AT evaluation.

*When writing a request for AT services in the initial 504 plan,
please use the following language:

The A&IT department will be notified and a request for AT services will be made. An AT consult or AT Evaluation will be completed based on student’s needs and at the recommendation of the A&IT Department.

In order to empower our staff and students with 504 plans, we would like to provide a simple reference on accommodations/supports and strategies that can be written into a 504 plan without an AT CONSULT.

This list in not exhaustive, but a compilation of the most commonly

requested and implemented AT-related supports.
