Is Read & Write for Google available for all students?
Yes! Read & Write for Google is available across a variety of devices. This means that ALL PCCS students can benefit from this valuable suite of tools on district-issued devices.
R&W4G is accessed via a Chrome extension in the Google Chrome browser. Also, many of the features (text to speech, dictionaries, and translate) can be accessed on iOS devices in the Safari web browser. Other features (word prediction, and the OpenDyslexic font) can be added as an enabled keyboard on an iOS device.
Students have access to Read&Write for Google Basic subscription for free. Isn’t that sufficient?
While Read and Write for Google’s Basic subscription offers students Play, Pause, Stop and Translate (Spanish), students will not have access to the more robust features available in the premium version.
This is a very expensive product. Is this a wise investment?
The cost of the product may seem expensive but considering the variety of tools you get in one package: text to speech, speech to text (Voice note), Summarizer, Simplifier, Translator, PDF/ePUB reader, Text dictionary, Picture dictionary, Vocabulary Tool and Word prediction just to name a few, the district can save money in the future by providing access to these tools in one product.
Is Read&Write for Google a tool only for students with disabilities?
Read&Write for Google is suitable and helpful for all P-CCS students. The Universal tools are useful for ALL general education students including those who are struggling learners, students in the MTSS process, English Learners and students with 504 plans.
Students in grades K-2 may not have a need to use Read&Write for Google as much as students in grades 3-12.
Last year, the district rolled out Rubicon Atlas for English Language Arts in grades K-10. This roll-out was revolutionary in that scaffolded supports were identified and Universal Design for Learning principles were suggested for every unit, including grades K-2. Currently, the district lacks system-wide tools teachers can use to implement the suggestions in the UDL section of Rubicon Atlas. Read&Write for Google provides options of tools for teachers to incorporate in their ELA units.
